Notice of Holding the 2019 School of Civil Engineering of Sun Yat-Sen University Summer Camp for Excellent Undergraduates
Based on the multi-disciplinary advantages of our comprehensive university, the School of Civil Engineering (SCE) at Sun Yat-Sen University integrates the development of disciplines such as civil engineering, water conservancy, transportation, and oceans; takes the common key issue of disaster prevention and controlling the water-soil (rock)-structural coupling system as a main direction; focuses on six disciplines, including infrastructure operation and maintenance, underground space engineering, marine civil engineering, urban water supply, water resources and water ecology, and river and sea dynamics; and aims to build civil engineering into a word-class discipline with Chinese characteristics. SCE has established a complete talent training system for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees: two first-level master's programs and related doctoral programs in civil engineering and water conservancy. SCE has nearly 60 faculty members, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one chief scientist of the National Basic Research Program of China, one recipient of the National Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, and three national outstanding young talents.
In order to promote the communications among excellent students of relevant majors from universities in China, enhance students’ understanding of the School of Civil Engineering of Sun Yat-Sen University, and attract and select excellent undergraduates to study in SCE, SCE will hold the 2019 School of Civil Engineering of Sun Yat-Sen University Summer Camp for Excellent Undergraduates from July 15th to July 19th and conduct the preliminary selection of examination-exemption postgraduate candidates (postgraduates who will enroll in 2020). The relevant matters are hereby notified as follow:
Ⅰ. Summer Camp Members Admission Plan
This summer camp is planned to admit 40 campers from universities in China (The final number and the enrolment number of different majors will be adjusted according to the actual registration, with enrollment being merit-based). Desired enrollment majors consist of but not limited to civil engineering, hydraulic engineering, marine engineering, and engineering mechanics, including civil engineering; water supply and drainage; urban underground space engineering; road, bridge and river-crossing engineering; transportation engineering; water conservancy and hydropower engineering; hydrology and water resources; hydraulics and river dynamics; and port and waterway engineering.
Ⅱ. Application Requirements
1. Applicants should be third-year undergraduates (expected graduation year: 2020) from first-class universities (Class A or Class B) in the fourth round of discipline assessment by the Ministry of Education, and applicants should have strong academic interests in applied majors and be potential candidates for talent training;
2. Applicants from other universities should rank among the top 10% of their major in terms of undergraduate academic performance;
3. Applicants should have a good command of English and should pass the College English Test 6 (CET-6), or have grades of the corresponding level in IELTS, TOEFL or GRE, or meet the foreign language level for examination-exemption students at their university.
Ⅲ. Application Procedures
1. Online Application
Fill out the registration form (see Appendix 1) and send this from as well as the transcript certificate of first five semesters, proof of grade ranking (both stamped with the official seal of the academic department), and the English certification materials to the email address civilyjs@mail.sysu.edu.cn. The deadline for online registration is 17:00 on June 30, 2019.
2. Material Evaluation and Summer Camp Qualification Assessment
The college admission leading group is responsible for the summer camp qualification assessment. Material evaluation will be completed by July 5th. The admission list will be published on the website of the School of Civil Engineering of Sun Yat-sen University (http:) and will be notified to the campers by email. SCE reimburses fees for round-trip transportation and accommodation, and purchases security insurance for all campers. Those who fail to be selected can also participate in this summer camp at their own expense.
Applicants must ensure that the materials submitted are true and accurate. If not, the applicant will be disqualified to participate in this summer camp and SCE reserves the right to pursue lawsuits.
Ⅳ. Registration Material Evaluation
Applicants are required to provide the following materials when registering for entry:
1.2019 Excellent College Summer Camp Application Form (Appendix 1);
2.The ideological and political quality and morality assessment form for people applying for postgraduate degrees at Sun Yat-sen University (Appendix 2);
3.Personal statement (Appendix 3);
4.Summary form (Appendix 4);
5.Up-to-date undergraduate transcript of grades up to the present (stamped by the academic department);
6.Foreign language level certification materials;
7.Other certificates: scanned documents of representative academic papers, publications or original work results that can reflect the applicants’ academic levels.
Note: The materials submitted by the applicants will not be returned upon registration. Please prepare copies of important materials.
V. Preferential Policy for Enrollment
Campers who have performed well in this summer camp will enjoy the following preferential policies for enrollment:
1. Excellent campers who obtain the Examination-exemption Qualification of their undergraduate university will have preference to be admitted as 2020 postgraduate students.
2. Excellent campers who will take the Unified National Graduate Entrance Examination, if applying for the relevant disciplines of SCE as first choice and achieving scores qualifying for corresponding discipline interview (including total scores and scores of each subject) of SCE, will have priority to be accepted under the same conditions after the interview.
Ⅵ. Schedule
1. Online application due date: before June 30
2. Announcement of accepted campers: around July 5th
3. Summer camp period: July 15th -- 19th (Registration on July 15th, registration location: School of Civil Engineering, 3rd Floor of Administration Building, Zhuhai Campus, Sun Yat-Sen University)
4. Summer camp activities:
On July 15th, 19:00-20:00, ice-breaking and policy announcements for campers (introduction to related policies of advantageous disciplines and the graduate award system);
On July 16th, opening ceremony, theme report by experts, research direction introduction (introduction of representative tutors of disciplines);
On July 17th, selection and assessment (including but not limited to pre-interview of examination-exemption students, assessment of research review ability, 3-minute research interest introduction or personal presentation., the specific arrangement is subject to the entry notification agenda), and communication exchange with excellent postgraduates
On July 18, visit Zhuhai campus and the surrounding environment.
On July 19, leave the camp.

Ⅷ. Campers Treatment and Precautions
1. SCE will purchase personal accident insurance (the effective term of the insurance is the period of the summer camp) and arrange accommodation for campers. SCE will be responsible for fees of transportation, venue and activity data of group activities. Please notify before the camp entry of any diet restrictions.
2. SCE reimburses round-trip tickets for students from nonlocal universities (second-class seat or below on high-speed rails, hard sleeper on overnight trains, hard seat or bus ticket). Airline tickets are not included. The ticket time for reimbursement should be the same as the duration of the summer camp. Reimbursement is applicable to the necessary travel itinerary to and from Zhuhai city, and private travel to other cities will not be reimbursed. Explanation shall be provided if the departure city and the destination city are inconsistent.
3. Students participating in the summer camp should abide by the relevant regulations of Sun Yat-sen University and the requirements of the summer camp. Please bring your ID card and student card when registering to participate in arranged activities. SCE will not provide relevant funds for those who leave the camp without permission or violate the relevant regulations.
